FAQ

Q: What is a "Lifetime block download account"?
A: Traditionally most Usenet Providers has only sold pay-per-month accounts, in which the number of gigs purchased had to be consumed by the end of the month - or you'd lose it. Later years they sometimes also offer "unlimited" accounts, but you still have to pay for them every month, or the account expires.
"Block account" instead means a pay-per-gigabyte account with no time limit; if you buy a quota block you can keep downloading until you have used up the purchased quota block, if that takes 10 days or 10 years doesn't matter, and there are no recurring fees. When you run out of quota, (or before you run out), you just add another quota block to the account. (Similar to pre-paid phone cards.)
WARNING: Lately some providers has begun advertising time limited Yearly, or even pay-per-month accounts having an expiring Yearly or monthly quota as "block accounts". Those are just standard limited accounts, what we sell are "real" block accounts, in its traditional meaning, with no time limits and no recurring fees!

Q: Does headers count against my block quota usage?
A: No. Normal downloads of headers are not counted against your block quota. Only non-header downloads are counted as long as the header downloads are reasonable compared to the total quota usage.

Q: Which payment options do you offer to buy quota Blocks?
A: The current options are to buy blocks using a Credit Card, (via the Stripe.com system) or via Amazon

Q: What are the server addresses?

A: We have two server systems, each can be accessed via standard connection (nntp), or SSL (nntps):

SERVER ADDRESSES:

  • news.us.Usenet-News.net (US Server farm, Ashburn, VA)
  • news.eu.Usenet-News.net (EU Server farm, Amsterdam, NL)

AVAILABLE PORTS:

  • NNTP: 119, 20, 23, 53, 443, 2000, 8080, 9000, 9001, 9002
  • NNTP+SSL: (NNTPS) : 563, 80, 81, 465, 993 *(See below)

Normally you should use the system closest to you, but if there is some issue at that system you might use the other system.

Q: How many simultaneous connections may I have to your servers? Can I connect from more than one IP?

A: You may use up to 60 simultaneous connections, total, to our server system, however using too many connections may even make your downloads slower. Use the minimum number that fills your connection bandwidth.
If you have a Block account you may connect simultaneously from different IPs, for example from your home and your office, but can not do it simultaneously if you have an Unlimited subscription. (Although you may still shift between different IP:s different times of the day, such as from home and work, just not connect simultaneously.)

Q: Which ports are available to use?

A: You can connect using the standard nntp port 119, or you can use the alternate ports 20, 23, 53, 443, 2000, 8080, 9000, 9001, or 9002.
For the SSL servers you can connect using the standard nntps SSL port 563, or alternate ports 465,993, 80 or 81. If your ISP caps nntp traffic we recommend using the alternate port, since some ISPs caps the standard nntps port 563 too.
Note that to use SSL, you need to have a SSL enabled newsreader, or an ssl proxy installed on your client computer.
*Please note that the servers no longer support SSLv2, which has multiple vulnerabilities and has been deprecated since 1996. Some older Newsreaders (notably Newsleecher v4 and older, but also others) use SSLv2, and can't be used to connect via SSL directly. If you need to use an old unsupported newsreader and want to connect via SSL, you can use SSL proxy software such as stunnel to accomplish that. Please note that some newsreaders may have a config setting to turn off SSLv2, and can then be used with no extras.

Q: Do I need a newsreader to access the newsgroups?

A: Yes. We do not provide a web interface to Usenet, so you need a newsreader like Outlook Express or Newsleecher to access the newsgroups. You find some news readers on this link.

Q: I don't understand how to log in to your servers!
A: You need a newsreader program to log on. (Like, for example, Outlook Express.) In your newsreader you configure your login, and which server(s) to use. Please refer to your newsreader's documentation on the details for your specific software.
If you don't have any newsreader, please see the "Newsreaders" link in our meny to the left.

Q: The server gives me an error when I try to access it, and I have checked my username and password, they are correct!

A: You may have run out of quota. Log in and check your usage via the "User login" link in our meny to the left..
If you have quota left, and the problem persist, please recheck that the login is entered correctly. The system is case sensitive, so "Password" isn't the same as "password" or "PASSWORD".
If you have just renewed a subscription, or purchased a new block, please note that it may take up to 15 minutes for the data to be synchronised to all servers.

Q: When downloading I get very slow download speed, why?
A: This is usually due to lack of capacity on your local net, or traffic congestion somewhere on the net between you and our server location. Additionally, some ISP:s are capping usenet downloads. You may then try to use an alternate port instead of the standard port 119. Please see the server addresses above for alternate ports for the different servers. Using an SSL encrypted connection can also help if your ISP is capping you.

Q: Some articles that I post to your servers do not seem to propagate to other news servers, why?
A: Another news server may be canceling them . We can take no further responsibility for articles not propagating once they have been sent to our upstream servers. Another reason, (if you also get a 440 error message when posting), could be if you have a record of abuse on our servers your posting access may have been disabled. Once your posting access has been disabled due to posting abuse it will never be restored, so don't even ask. Nor will we issue refunds for this reason.

Q: I have lost my username and/or password. What do I need to do?
A: Use our lost login form, and you will get them sent to you automatically.

Q: How do I cancel my subscription?
(Subscriptions only, not block accounts.)
A:
On the signup page there is a "Cancel Subscription" button, and on the support page there is a cancellation link. (Or you can use this link.) Following that link will give you full instructions how to cancel your subscription. Your account will still be active until the end of the current period.
Please note that block accounts can't be cancelled, it's only for recurring subscriptions the recurring payments can be cancelled. Block accounts are valid until you have used up the quota you purchased, no matter if it takes several years.

Q: I need to change the credit card I am using to subscribe. What do I need to do?
(Subscriptions only, not block accounts.)
A:
Log in to your account at CCDeb. There you may change your active credit card.
